In California, there are three legal classifications for an A.R. 15. #1 is a registered assault rifle, this is an AR 15 that was grandfathered in after one of the three registration periods. #2 is a fixed magazine A.R. 15, this is an AR 15 where the upper half of the rifle must be separated from lower half of the rifle two insert or remove the magazine. If you have this feature there are very few other limitations on the make up of the rifle. #3 is a featureless A.R. 15, if you have a magazine which can be easily removed from the rifle, the rest of the rifle must be 30 inches in total length, have no flash suppressor at the end of the barrel, have no downward facing forward grip, have no pistol grip which you can wrap your thumb around, and not have an adjustable stock.
