To transport a handgun in California, you must take your unloaded handgun and place it in a locked container. The locked container must be placed in your trunk, your hatchback, or behind the rear seat in a truck. Handguns cannot be stored in the glove compartment or the center consul of your vehicle. The container must be locked with a key lock, a padlock, a combination lock, or any similar type lock.
