Making A Handgun Safe

Here is how to make a handgun safe. Walking up to a handgun like this doesn't give you enough information to determine if the handgun is safe. Before touching the handgun look in the magazine well to see if there is a magazine in. We also don't know if there is a round in the chamber. When picking up the gun keep your finger off the trigger. Press the magazine release button to remove the primary source of ammunition. Point the gun in a safe direction. Grasping the slide, pull the slide rearward ejecting any rounds from the chamber. With your right thumb push the slide lock or slide release button upward while racking the slide to the rear. With the slide locked backwards you can now visually inspect that there are no rounds in the chamber. After verifying that there are no magazines in the magazine well, this gun is now as safe as it can be made.
