Transporting A Handgun In California

Writer's picture: Mike PettengillMike Pettengill

Here is how to legally and safely transport your handgun in California if you do not have a concealed carry permit. First thing is to make sure you have no ammunition in the magazine and no magazine in the chamber. Once you are certain there is no ammunition in the gun you can insert it into your container. You can also insert magazines into the container, but the magazines may not be loaded with ammunition. Your container does not have to be a hard case, however it must be closed and sealed with a combination lock or a key lock. The locked container must be stored in your vehicle at the furthest point from the driver. Ammunition can be stored in the same location but in a separate container.
