Transporting a handgun in a vehicle in California can be complicated. But here is what the law says, and a few opinions of ours. The law says that you can transport your handgun in your car when the handgun is unloaded and in a locked container. Container is not defined in the law. The law says that you cannot put your gun in the glove compartment or in the center console, even if they lock. It says you can put the gun in a trunk as long as the trunk locks. However, a trunk which provides access from the rear seat does not qualify. Ammunition can be stored anywhere. The container which holds the gun must be located away from the driver.
